The Making of a Philippine Colonial State: American Militarism and Anti-Colonial Nationalism During the Filipino-American War (1899-1913)

Explore exceptional images portraying the emergence of Filipino nationalism during the Filipino-American War as well as the attempts of the Americans to 're-imagine' a new colonial state in Asia Pacific. The Making of a Philippine Colonial State: American Militarism and Anticolonial Nationalism During the Filipino-American War (1899-1913) is the first major exhibition of Filipiniana.net that features historical images illustrating the impact of American militarism on Filipino nationalism. The Filipino struggle for national independence suddenly changed its course with the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898. As a result of this war, the United States, an emerging world power, became entangled in the events of the Philippine Revolution. The arrival of the Americans is cited by many historians as another chapter in the history of anticolonial struggle in the country. Initially, the Americans seemed to support Filipinos in eliminating the Spanish colonial yoke. American geopolitical objectives would eventually be unmasked as they sought to occupy the Philippines.

This online exhibition looks back to the most critical areas of military confrontation between Filipino revolutionaries and American soldiers. It is a treasure trove of rare and captivating images depicting the revolutionary activities of Filipinos in their struggle for independence. It showcases the bravery and heroism of Filipino revolutionaries who offered their lives to establish an independent nation-state. Major battle scenes as well as atrocities committed by American soldiers are vividly shown.

This exhibit is an attempt to present the struggle and travail of Filipinos after their short-lived emancipation from colonialism. Likewise, it is an effort to provide deeper insights into the nature of American militarism and anticolonial nationalism through the medium of colonial photography. It features selected photographs published in travel accounts, photographic albums, and government documents of the early American colonial period. It contains photographs taken from J.D. Givens' Scenes from the Philippines, Japan and the Pacific (1900), Harper's History of the War in the Philippines (1899), F. Tennyson Neely's Fighting in the Philippines (1899) and A Wonderful Reproduction of Living Scenes in Natural Color Photos of America's New Possessions (1901).

Filipiniana.net presents this valuable collection of historical images to researchers, scholars, historians, educators, students and individuals interested in learning more about the Philippines and its people's struggle to eradicate the vestiges of colonialism.
